Headteacher CV: Quick overview

A UK headteacher CV should balance strategic leadership with demonstrable results across safeguarding, curriculum quality, and operational performance. Highlight measurable pupil outcomes (e.g.

Progress 8, Attainment 8), Ofsted or ISI-related improvements, attendance, safeguarding compliance, staff development, and financial stewardship to illustrate the breadth of your responsibility and impact.

CV structure and order

Use a UK-friendly order: contact details, professional profile, core competencies, leadership experience, education and qualifications, and governance/community involvement. Keep sections clearly separated so a recruiter or applicant tracking system can quickly locate your key achievements.

Aim for two pages, and tailor each section to the job description and stated requirements.

Professional profile: Example and how to write it

Begin with a concise opening that states your headteacher role, years of experience, and the types of schools you have led, then add two sentences that quantify your key results. Example: "Experienced headteacher with 12 years of leadership across primary and secondary settings, including academies with up to 1,800 pupils.

Led a five-year school improvement programme that raised Progress 8 by 0.4, improved attendance by 3 percentage points, and managed a £6M annual budget."

Core competencies and leadership highlights

List 8 to 12 competencies that match the job posting and reflect senior-level work, such as strategic planning, safeguarding and wellbeing, curriculum leadership and assessment, data-informed decision-making, financial governance, governance liaison, staff development and appraisal, and community partnerships. Group related skills, avoid generic phrases, and be specific about the UK frameworks you used (Ofsted, safeguarding policies, Pupil Premium, etc.).

Work experience: Showing impact and scale

For each role, emphasise schoolwide results and your direct contributions to those outcomes, not just daily duties. Use a brief context sentence followed by two to four achievement bullets that include metrics, timeframes, and the cohort or staff sizes affected where possible.

Writing achievement bullets

Use this simple formula in each bullet: action, context, result. For example: "Directed a school improvement initiative across the 11-18 age range that increased maths proficiency by 15 percentage points over two years by implementing targeted coaching and revised schemes of work."

Education, qualifications and professional development

List your UK qualifications in education, including degrees, initial teacher training (PGCE or QTS), and any leadership qualifications (e.g. NPQH or NPQ).

Include dates and awarding bodies. Mention relevant UK-specific credentials and professional development (safeguarding, senior leadership programmes, data analytics for schools).

Reference your GCSEs and A-levels where appropriate, and note UCAS points or Russell Group university study if relevant to the role.

Additional Tips

  • 1
When possible quantify change with context and timescale, for example Progress 8 gains, attendance improvements, or budget savings; keep these examples concise and scan-friendly.
