A graduate level paralegal CV in the United Kingdom should show relevant legal exposure, strong research and writing skills, and the professionalism UK employers expect. This guide explains how to structure your CV, which sections to include, and example phrases you can use to highlight internships, university clinics, and transferable skills.

What UK employers look for

UK employers want clear evidence that you can support solicitors with legal research, document drafting, and case management. They value attention to detail, confidentiality, and the ability to follow firm procedures under supervision.

Demonstrate reliability, organisation, and effective communication with clients and colleagues.

CV format and layout

Choose a clean, professional format with legible fonts (for example Arial or Calibri) and consistent spacing so your CV is quick to scan. For graduates with under two years of experience, aim for a one-page CV; if you have several relevant internships or placements, a two-page CV is acceptable.

Use reverse chronological order for your experience and present dates in DD/MM/YYYY format. Clearly label sections and avoid long blocks of text.

Contact information and headline

Place your full name, UK mobile number, a professional email address, and your LinkedIn profile at the top. Add a short headline under your name such as Graduate Paralegal or Paralegal - University Legal Clinic Experience to clarify your focus.

If applicable, note your right to work in the UK and any visa status, for example 'Right to work in the UK; visa sponsorship not required'.

Professional profile

Write a two to three sentence profile that highlights your legal placements, research abilities, and what you want to achieve next. Focus on concrete contributions such as drafting documents, preparing bundles, organising client interviews, or supporting case management rather than generic statements about being hardworking.

Education and relevant coursework

List your degree, university, graduation date, and relevant modules such as Legal Methods, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Contract Law, and Tort. For recent graduates, including academic honours, moot court participation, pro bono work, or a capstone project with real case work can be helpful.

If you studied at a Russell Group university, mention it. For UK applicants, also note GCSEs and A-levels if they add value to your profile.

Experience: Internships and university clinics

For each role include the job title, organisation, location, and dates (DD/MM/YYYY) followed by 3 to 5 bullet points that describe specific tasks and outcomes. Start bullets with strong action verbs and quantify impact where possible, such as the number of files managed, documents drafted, bundles prepared, or hours of research.

Emphasise work that relates to paralegal duties, such as client interviews, drafting correspondence, preparing court or tribunal bundles, and maintaining orderly case files. Include any university clinics or pro bono work and describe your contributions.

Additional Tips

  • 1
When you lack formal paralegal experience, highlight relevant coursework, university or charity legal clinics, volunteering, and transferable skills from roles such as office administration or research. Emphasise how these experiences relate to legal work, for example drafting documents, organising files, or supporting a team under supervision.
  • 2
Maintain a portfolio with sample documents, case summaries, and a concise list of tasks you performed so you can cite concrete examples during interviews.
  • 3
Practice describing your role in clear terms, focusing on what you did, how you did it, and the outcomes so you can discuss your experience confidently at interview.
