How to format your cashier CV

Begin with a clean layout using consistent fonts, margins, and spacing to make your CV easy to scan. For most applicants with less than 5 years of experience, aim for a two-page CV; graduates or early-career applicants can keep it to one page.

Use bold or small caps only for section headings to keep emphasis clear.

Place your name and contact details at the top, followed by a personal profile, a skills section, work experience, and education. Use 10 to 12 point body font and 14 to 16 point for your name to improve readability on desktop and mobile.

In the UK, present dates in DD/MM/YYYY format.

Include your right-to-work status and ensure contact details are up to date. Avoid decorative templates that may hinder applicant tracking systems (ATS).

CV example: Write a concise profile

Open with a 2-3 sentence profile (personal statement) that tells the reader who you are, what you offer, and what you want next in your role. Focus on customer service strengths, cash handling accuracy, and familiarity with point-of-sale systems rather than vague traits.

For example, write a short statement that highlights your years of experience, a key skill, and a measurable result to show impact. Keep the tone confident and helpful so the employer sees you can support store operations from day one.

CV example: Show clear work experience entries

List roles in reverse chronological order and use 3-5 bullet points per role to describe achievements and responsibilities. Start each bullet with an action verb and include specific details such as transaction volume, error reduction, or customer satisfaction improvements when you have them.

Quantify where possible with numbers you can verify, like average transactions per shift or till variances you contributed to. If you lack numeric data, describe consistent duties that show reliability such as training new cashiers or balancing tills at the end of a shift.

CV example: Highlight skills and POS knowledge

Create a short skills section with 6 to 10 relevant items that match the job description and reflect your strengths. Include hard skills such as point-of-sale systems, cash handling, and stock basics alongside customer service and conflict resolution skills.

Keep skills specific and tailored to the role. Example items: cash handling, till reconciliation, EPOS proficiency, card payments, refunds and exchanges, GDPR/data protection awareness, basic stock awareness, and health and safety basics.

CV example: Education and qualifications

List your education in reverse chronological order. In the UK, include GCSEs with grades, A-levels or other further qualifications, and any vocational certificates.

If you are a recent graduate, you may place emphasis on education; otherwise, focus more on practical experience.

Include institutions and dates in the UK format (DD/MM/YYYY). Mention UCAS points, if applicable, and note any qualifications from recognised bodies (e.g.

City & Guilds, BTEC).

If you have relevant training (First Aid, customer service training, GDPR awareness), include it under a separate Certifications or Training section. For NHS or healthcare roles, reference NHS pay bands where appropriate (e.g.

Band 2) and ensure your CV aligns with local pay structures. Include a line about right-to-work status where relevant and list any references available on request.

Additional Tips

  • 1
If you lack numeric achievements, describe consistent responsibilities like till reconciliation at the end of each shift and training teammates.
  • 2
Prioritise skills and bullets that reflect reliability, accuracy, and speed, since those qualities matter most for cashier roles.
  • 3
Use a simple, readable format and avoid decorative templates that may confuse applicant tracking systems.
