Tip: use the template as a starting point, then swap in your own numbers and project names.

Accountant CV example: Header and Summary

Start your CV with a clear header that includes your name, professional title (for example Senior Accountant, Management Accountant, or Financial Controller), city or town and country in the UK (for example Manchester, UK), a UK phone number, and a professional UK email address. Keep the header concise so recruiters and applicant tracking systems can identify your contact details quickly.

Do not include date of birth or marital status to comply with UK privacy practices.

Write a professional summary of two to three sentences that highlights your core accounting strengths and the value you bring. Use role-specific terminology and UK accounting keywords from the job posting, and avoid vague phrases that do not describe your actual experience.

If applicable, mention your right-to-work status in the UK.

Accountant CV example: Work Experience

List your work experience in reverse chronological order with each entry including your job title, employer, location (city, UK), and dates of employment in the format DD/MM/YYYY or Month Year. For each role, provide two to four achievement-focused lines that start with an action verb and explain the result you produced for the team or organisation.

When you write achievement lines, use measurable outcomes when possible and provide context if you prefer placeholders to be replaced later with exact figures.

Example phrasing you can adapt includes: Prepared monthly management accounts, improving reconciliation accuracy by X percent; Implemented a new invoicing process that reduced supplier payment errors by Y percent. Avoid listing only responsibilities that repeat the job title or basic duties without showing impact.

Instead, demonstrate how your actions improved processes, supported audits, or contributed to close cycles by linking the task to an outcome. If relevant, mention experience with UK accounting standards (UK GAAP or IFRS) and statutory reporting, VAT, payroll, and year-end processes.

Accountant CV example: Education and Certifications

Education and professional qualifications: Place your highest qualification first, including degree name, awarding institution, and graduation year (YYYY) if recent or relevant. Include UK professional qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA, ACA, CIPFA, or other recognised licences, listing the credential, awarding body, and year earned to make credentials easy to scan.

If you are early in your career, add relevant coursework, honours, or academic projects that demonstrate practical accounting skills.

If you have completed or are pursuing certifications, list them with expected completion dates. For UK candidates, include GCSEs and A-levels if recent or relevant, with grades, as well as UCAS points and any notable modules.

If you attended a Russell Group university or another UK institution, you may mention this in context with your career goals. For NHS or public sector roles, familiarise with pay frameworks and reporting requirements, and reference relevant regulatory standards where appropriate.

Additional Tips

  • 1
Before you submit your CV, proofread for consistency in dates (use DD/MM/YYYY where dates are shown) and terminology, and have a colleague verify that your achievement statements are clear and verifiable. Tailor the first three lines of the Work Experience section to match the most important qualifications in the job advert, and replace placeholders with exact figures where possible to enhance credibility. In the UK, note right-to-work status where relevant, and be mindful of statutory entitlements such as 28 days of annual leave and pension auto-enrolment. Use pounds sterling (£) for any salary figures you include, and reference UK pay scales or NHS pay bands if applicable.
